Looking for a fashion week job?

PARIS FASHION WEEK|Jobs, Gigs, Casting| 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

Paris may be a tougher nut to crack that some other cities, unless you know French.

The French love people who speak French (okay, that sounds silly and obvious, but trust us ... the French really like it.) In fact, you don't even have to speak it well to gain their admiration. If you can just get more than a few phrases together, they'll love you forever. No matter how they may correct you, trust us, when you try, their corrections come from a place of love. The French are awesome: you just have to know how they think. The attempt to understand and always be polite is incredibly important.

Obviously France has a great number of modeling opportunities, stylist gigs, and sometimes opportunities for designers to showcase looks (remember Paris is a very established market), but if you want to get your "foot in the door," your best bet may well be to volunteer.

Using your very best manners (always start with "bonjour," except at night, when it's "bonsoir" ... we're not kidding about this, and neither are they), you could try contacting Mode a Paris, the official Paris Fashion Week site. Email would probably be a good start, but you could also call. Remember to factor in time differences.

Take a look at the Paris Fashion Week schedules. Look up the designers and try contacting them directly using their web pages. (Again, keep in mind the time difference so you don't accidentally call them while they're sleeping. Not likely, but hey, just thought we'd mention.)

Try using one of the methods above and offer to help out for free. "Free" can be hard to turn down. And it can look great on your resume.

Because so many "expatriates" (people living away from their home country, often shortened to "expats") live in Paris, there are many community websites dedicated to supporting these "expat communities" in Paris.

Here are some "expat" sites and job boards that can help:

Bonjour Paris

Paris Forums
Paris Craigslist

Jobs > Art, Media, Design

Gigs > Talent Gigs

Gigs > Creative Gigs

While in Paris, there's also a popular job board for Americans and English-speakers at the American Church in Paris.

Want to walk the runway during Fashion Week in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Milan or Tokyo?

If you don't have a portfolio together, you can create one for free at Model Mayhem.

There are great model castings at (You can even choose by country.)

You can also check for modeling agency casting calls.

And don't forget Model Mayhem gig listings (once you're a member).

If you want to show your designs on the runway, you may be able to apply on the official sites. (Click for each city). Your best bet is to look at past or upcoming event calendars. Find the listed promoters by clicking links, or via Google, and contact them directly. Be especially careful of anyone offering to "sell you a package" to showcase your designs.

While a small submission fee may be reasonable, know that when you pay to showcase your designs on the runway, the cost may outweigh the benfit.

While it's possible you will receive media or other attention, the reputation of "pay to showcase" events is usually in doubt. As a result, less press may attend the event (or even none). However, if you can spare the money, it may be nice to have some video or photographs of your designs on the runway. Be sure your contract with the event organizer ensures you will have professional-quality photos of the event! You may want to bring a "back up" photographer or videographer to be extra sure.

We've assembled some other links and info. to help you find designer jobs during fashion week.

For those looking for stylist jobs during fashion week, we think Model Mayhem is probably "the" place. It's free and sort of the "Facebook of fashion."

Whether you are a hair stylist, makeup artist, stage designer or wardrobe stylist, there are many, many opportunities to explore.
